Over the summer I trained 4 weeks of power before a 2 week "rest" trip to Wild Iris, where I did a few 13b's in a few tries each. As the climbing there is short and bouldery (my antistyle), it met or exceeded my expectations. Then 2 more weeks of power and 2 weeks of power endurance before I started climbing outside again. A tendon injury sidelined me for a few weeks from my project, and then after returning, several skin injuries slowed me down. All that combined with never quite good temps on the days I can make it down have left the season below expectation. However, after lowering my sights and doing a 13b and a 13a I hadn't done, and getting back into the gym with renewed skin, I'm right back to my strength levels pre-season.
It was a poorly timed peak, and poorly timed injuries (is there ever a good time?), but my training this winter will be much the same.

512OW, skin injury... herpes fucked up your seasons again... damn those out breaks! Maybe next year the out breaks and the climbing seasons can stagger them selves, then 5.14OW will be your new name...

Give me a break! "old man of 40". I guess that makes me an antique. I know I feel like one at times but I'm happy that I'm still climbing at my age. Plan on continuing climbing for many years to come.

Regarding training, physically, I'm holding my own. Mentally, I'm taking a new approach and will purposefully be "working" harder routes. I've always been my own limiting factor by only getting on grades that I felt I would get on the first go.

My dad did a V5 and V6 on Sunday down south. He is 64 years old and didn't start climbing until he was 54 years old.

I'm 52. 2 of my climbing partners are 55 and 58 and are climbing solid as well. The 3 of us are known as Geez, Geezer, and Geezest at the gym we climb at in PA. What's funny is that between the 3 of us, we climb more vertical feet in any given week whether it's indoors or out than any other group of 3 climbers at that gym.

The body may be breaking down however the mind is as young . . . what was I talking about?

I didn't start climbing until I was 40. Like the rest of the old guys, there's plenty of time. I'm 49, and while I may not be as strong as my partners (or most climbers in general), I still enjoy pushing my limits.

Geoff! Glad to hear you are going to start pushing yourself and doing some projects. Take some falls dude!

Pigsteak! I agree.
