Hurt Knee

Post by rhunt »

Ok since everyone else is whining about their latest injuries, I thought I would join in. Two weeks ago, I tweaked my right knee doing a heel hook/knee bar on my new super secrete 5.17c 5 star classic. My knee made a pop sound as it was being forced away from my body during the move and now hurts when with the slighted force in that directions. I don't walk with a limp and can still climb, jog (at little) and ride - but I have to be careful how I use my knee and it feels unstable at times. I am concerned that I may have really torn something and was wondering if I should get it looked at or wait it out.

Oh and should I just do yoga?

I'd probably have it looked at, at least by a friend or relative who's into sports medicine. If nothing else, get one of these neoprene knee wrap things

I blew my knee out (patellar subluxation, to be exact) doing martial arts several years ago and wore one for quite a while after it was "healed". It provides a lot of stability and support, not just for the kneecap, but for other ligaments as well. At least that's how it felt (I'm no doctor). I still pull it out every one in a while if I'm doing something high-impact and I want the added sense of security.

I'd also start examining your legwork a little closer. Things don't usually pop and crack unless there is force put on it in a way that it's not meant to handle. When my knee blew, it was because I was turning my foot outward slightly when jumping and landing on it. That's it. It was a hard way to learn that you can't forget about proper form.

Sounds like it could be a strained PCL, so if it is... I had mine reconstructed about 10 years ago. Last fall, I was toeing-in with my leg, pulling inward similar to a heel hook. I felt the knee 'give' along with a sharp pain behind the knee.

I thought I tore it again and would have ot get it worked on a second time (I did get it evaluated and the doctor who performed the initial surger recommended rehab), but it tightened up within 8 weeks with rest and rehab. I used a knee brace for the first few weeks.

If the pain doesn't subside and it's unstable after 2 weeks I'd get it looked at. Go easy on it if it hurts bad and eventually work int running, cycling, weights etc. to strengthen.

yeah I tried a knee brace I have laying around but it made it feel worse but I think I need to try a different kind. I one I have isn't open at the knee cap and so i think it puts the wrong kinda pressure on my knee joint. As for foot work - it was pretty shitty - I was sketched out doing the move and just forced my lower leg to do something it wasn't meant to do....plus I am old and crusty.

I manged to take third place last weekend in a 12hr adventure race with a team of 4 - so I must not be that bad!

And Andrew - this whole post was just a means for me to spray about the 3rd place win - I thought you might appreciate my crafty means of spraying!

I would have appreciated it, and I do appreciate it now, but unfortunately I never actually read your post beyond the first sentence.

About a year ago I hurt my knee really bad and didn't tear anything, but definitely sprained something and it took over 6 months to get back to the point where I could climb again comfortably. Its my biggest fear now when I do climb because I feel like I am prone to do something to it again.

From the sound of what you were doing, I had something similar happen to my left knee. It popped, I dropped off the climb and was lowered. After icing it for a day or so, it still hurt. The pain was on the outside of the knee, below the kneecap. It didn't impact the walking or biking but whenever I was climbing, it would hurt when I had my leg in certain positions. I went to a sports medicine doc and after examining my knee and xrays, he concluded that I had bruised the head of my tibia. He said to try to keep from doing the same motion that brought it about for a week or so and everything should be fine.

After a week, no pain.
