Back in 2001, it was a $250 fine if you were caught taking a dump and not using a blue back on Mt Rainier. A guy didn't want to wait in line up at Camp Muir so he ran behind a pile of rock. One of the rangers saw him and decided to climb up over the rocks. Once on top and seeing what was happening, he bellowed in a loud voice where all around could hear: "Pinch it off dude, you're busted!"

Another $250 into the National Parks general fund.

All those at Camp Muir got a great laugh, well all except the one who had to "pinch it off".

at the lower saddle of the grand teton they have a toilet type thingy that you can sit on and use your wag bag... the wag bag fits perfectly over the toilet seat and there's a wall around you for privacy and wind protection. they look like they'd be cheap to make, virtually maintainence free, and easy to place about anywhere. you shit in the bag, wipe your ass, seal it, and pack it out... easy as that.

the self- composting kind like they have at smith are exoensive but dont get turned over and vandalized as much as the port a shitter kind.

Really? If you can do this, that would be a dream come true (seriously), but currently we don't have the funds to support this. We have 65K hanging over our heads until 2012, but that is something I've been wishing for some time ...

This would obviously need to be a longer-term project until the AF loan is paid off. I am pretty sure they would fund toilets though as they have at many other areas in need, if RRGCC were to stay in good rapport with them, no?...

Kipp, Rifle is a city park and all services including bathrooms are covered by the $5/day entry fee. Yes, it is much harder to get stuff done without an entry fee and voluntary donations instead.

so there is the answer dustonian....no one gets to climb in the southern region wihtout paying $5 per visit.

I think an entry fee is fair in exchange for the mortgage at the PMRP, bathrooms, and general maintenance... you can also get an annual pass at Rifle that brings it down to $40 a year. I already donate way more than this to RRGCC, Muir, and Torrent. It's the price of keeping these places open, clean, and accessible. The problem is with voluntary donations the vast majority of visitors to the Red give nothing and contribute nothing (except piles of toilet paper).

well said... entry fee or parking fee, one or the other. the funds could also be used to maintain the road. 8)

dustonian, Sounds like a simple solution, but unfortunately, once a landowner charges for use on his land, he becomes liable for injuries/deaths. On top of that, we don't have paid personnel to check cars.
