Update

Post by weber »

Further information about Saturday's rescue training:

We will start at 10 AM sharp. No charge. All are welcome. Ropes will be already be in place so that we can minimize "down time." Each person who attends will be given a CD of photos of the techniques, gear, and rigging used in the training session. Cordalette cord will be available at my cost. Training ends at 11:30, and I'll be there for the next couple hours for those who want to practice techniques learned.

In the event of rain (chances are 20%) we will do the training under the roofs above the upper part of the BruiseBrothers Wall.

Thanks Rick, I hope everyone appreciates how much you and Liz do and give to allow OTHERS to enjoy climbing.

For those who don't think this is worth it, a few weeks ago I went climbing with Rick and he demonstrated how to safely and quickly retrieve a frightened child clinging for all they are worth on a wall. It was nice, but I figured not necessary for me since my kids are pretty comfortable coming down from a climb. Then last weekend, I took my wife's cousin's kids climbing and the 6 year old freaked about 25 feet up, grabbed hold to the wall, and clung there in a panic. I could either sit there and wait a few hours for her grip to fail, or put Rick's tutelage into practice. Fast, easy, and it allowed me to be right next to the child to calm her nerves. So for the second time in one post, thanks, Rick!

Thanks to the 24 people who attended. (we expected 4 or 5.) We will do this again soon, so those who couldn't make it - stay tuned here for next date and time.

The "climbers helping climbers" initiative is taking off much faster and with greater vigor than we had expected. We'll try to stay on top of it and keep the momentum going.

If anyone needs instruction or help in any way in the rescue scene, don't hesitate to call us: 606-668-9066 or 317-402-0118 or PM.

By the way, the FRS radio system works better than anticipated in Muir. We had clear conversations between BruiseBrothers and our house. And, actually during the training today, we had our first call via radio for assistance in Muir.

I would have loved to go! I will be there next time for sure. Unfortunately, 2 days notice wasn't enough for me. Of course, it sounds like you had your hands full anyway. Sounds great, keep up the good work!

I went and greatly appreciated it. While there's often an ascender in tow for Cave belaying, I don't have a cordalette and now see the use in sport climbing. Thanks for taking the time to do this, Weber!

Yeah, thanks again. Its silly how little I know about the simple rescue techniques.

I felt very ignorant that after about 4 years of climbing I just learned what seems to me to be one of the simplest knots around yet I never new it existed. Although I may never need to use it, the klemheist knot will sure come in handy if ever I do encounter an awkward situation. I plan on buying a couple lengths of cordalette and keeping them as part of my standard climbing gear.

Thanks for putting this on Rick, Liz, and other helpers!
efil lanrete... i enjoy the sound, but in truth i find this seductively backward idea to be quite frightening
