Briefly, World Cup champion Salavat Rakhmetov from Russia was climbing in Turkey. He dislodged a large rock, which hit his 5 y.o. daughter Zalia. She is currently in coma in a hospital in Turkey. Her hand was amputated and she still has bone shards in her brain. Her parents' insurance is running out. Please follow the link above for more info and how to make a donation. Thanks.

that is sad stuff.
Not trying to hijack, but don't all Russian citizens have health care/medical assistance free of charge? aka universal health care coverage?
If so, why is the family out a potential 100k +? Is it because they are stuck in Turkey?
all you haters die slow.

It is capitalism now in Russia. They don't have universal medical coverage anymore as they used to have in the Soviet Union.

Their insurance company was paying until today. The policy is expiring as of now. They are facing several weeks of ICU in Turkey, plus surgery and can not transport the girl back to Russia in the condition she is in now.

I want to thank everyone who has made donations. The majority of the donated funds are being wired directly to Salavat's bank account. I've heard of single donations up to $10,000 being made. The PayPal option in the link above is to make donations easier for US residents.

Here is an update. Zalia's brain swelling is receding. She moved her fingers and attempted to open her eyes. The good news is that apparently there are no bone fragments in the brain, only swelling. She is in one of the best hospitals in Turkey. Since human brain swells during plane liftoff and landing, she cannot be transported anywhere at least for several weeks.

This is how it happened. Salavat Rakhmetov, was climbing with three friends. His wife Guzel and daughter Zalia were playing in some distance away from the wall. Salavat was taking down the draws from a very easy warm-up route, like 5.8, when a huge chunk of rock he was holding, almost the size of Salavat himself, broke off the wall and fell down on a tree, which was growing from the wall. The tree sprang and tossed the rock right on Zalia, who was perhaps the farthest of all from the wall.

As of today, approximately $75,000 has been donated, of which ~$9,000 came via PayPal from Western climbers and non-climbers. About $45-50,000 is still needed.

Salavat and Guzel want to thank everyone who support them in fight for their daughter's life.

I guess, I am taking this accident too close because of my own 7 y.o. daughter who loves climbing. There are so many dangers at the crag for little kids. Rockfalls, snakes, you name it.
