Yeah if he really skies it, I'm sunk. I will be extracted through the biners easy.

thx guys for your words. I wasn't hurt, but it is hard on the head as the belayer. I have been playing the fall over and over in my mind doing all the 'what if' scenarios...

what if I had taken a step backwards, what if I had out to much slack, what if I had tried to pull more in....what if...what if.

he hit the ledge with the stretch in the rope, because when he came to rest, he was above the ledge.

Everything I did was perfect. It was the ledge in the way. damn that granite.

I need to get out and belay on that route again. And climb it myself.
I am teaching a two day beginner course this weekend, and it will be good for me to think about the basics with all of the newbies.
Safety is ALWAYS my number on priority, and now I have a story.

And yes...before he left the ground, I checked his harness, knot, my harness, the ATC and Beener. we put on our helmets, and the injuries.
Regardless...I am shaken...(not stirred)
and boy would a Martini be good right now.........

thanks again guys, and I will come to the RRG asap!!!

Hey CCG, I had a very similar experience belaying my boyfriend. His foot hit a ledge and there was a small fracture. He's been out of commission for about 2 months, but we're now climbinb again. It was definately NO fun. I know what you mean about it messing with your head, the re-plays while you're sleeping, the guilt, etc. We're the same way about safety ... double and triple checking everything ... All this to say I feel for ya both. Keep climbing!!

good luck to you and your boyfriend too.

Cool... glad you're back out climbing again though. I feel horrible for your boyfriend. That sounds painful, frustrating and boring! At least mine could climb with one foot and had a sense of humor about it all. Well, at least the Red will be here when he's healed, and so will we. Let us know when you're able to make it!
