The victim was a 28-year old male, Shaun Wilhoite, from Owenton, KY who was camping in the Gorge with friends. The group hiked up to Pebble Beach around 2:00 PM on Saturday, and the victim started to climb – free solo – up Beachcomber (5.4). He climbed in leather hiking boots, and his friends said he had no rock climbing experience. He topped out and moved over onto the Arrowhead pinnacle, from which he fell about 54 feet headfirst onto the rock-strewn base. He died instantly. RRGMRT responded and performed the recovery.

He was married and had a 5 year old son. His three best friends were there with him on this annual camping trip and tried to revive him. Terrible accident, but they were not there rock climbing. They had camp set up for the weekend about a mile from the bridge. 14 people total in the group. Not sure how many of the 14 were there when the accident happened. My friend, who told me all this, was there when he fell. He reports that he had not been drinking and did not use drugs. When he started climbing up, the rest tried to stop him but he did not listen.
After he fell, amazingly, someone had bars and called 911. I think Menifee County was there within 20 minutes. 4 EMTs. My friend helped them get their gear up to the site and at that point it became a recovery. He was gone. Rick Weber and three other climbers were there within 25 minutes of the 911 call. Thanks Rick for all your efforts and managing the recovery.
