I think guns prevent a lot of crimes. Guns sales have sky rocketed lately and deadly violent crime has gone down in a bad economy. What else would explain this?

Yep, The gun control advocates always told us that we had it all wrong, that it wasn't the ever increasing number of guns being sold that was responsible for the dropping crime rate, but rather the strong economy and high employment.
Now the economy sucks, people are out of work everywhere, gun and ammunition sales boom and crime drops at a record rate. I can't wait for the logical flips, twists and turns that will be needed to explain this. Hilarity will surely ensue.

Guns are kind of a necessary evil. Same with nukes. They are deterrents. The question is which way causes less death with or without. Nobody how ever hard they try will be able to answer this question. We haven't had any major world wars since the invention of the nuke. Before the nuke things were a little crazier. Something about the big stick that brings people into line. Without it the whackos run crazy just because they are and there is nothing we can to do reduce the number of whackos. We just have to deal with them. Unfortunately, guns and nukes work well.
Guns can be very safe. You must take responsibility and be a safe gun owner. Just like climbing, one screw up and someone is dead. It's the unsafe people that die from guns. They own a gun and don't treat it like a deadly weapon. They give responsible gun owners a bad reputation. If someone broke into my home, I may point a gun at them but wouldn't shoot unless needed. I would tell them to leave and give them an out. And don't leave a loaded gun under your bed, ever. An untrained person may find it and have an accident. All highly logical decisions. Unfortunately, not everyone is logical.
My grandmother saved herself with a shotgun. Two criminals were trying to do a home invasion on here out in the country and she was alone. A double barrel to the face as they were trying to get in made them leave. Who knows how it would have played out had they got in.

The Taurus "Judge" is probably your best option for self defense. Home or otherwise. Something about a five shot shotgun/pistol. (if you can't get it done in five shots..brother...you'd better RUN!")
First rule of ownership
1) Always make a good run before you take a bad stand-If you can save yourself by quickly Leaving a situation then do so.
2)Like Larry said, bring a gun-Be familiar with its safety's and its limitations. Even more so be aware of your own limitations. i.e. how far can you accurately shoot. How fast can you draw and use your weapon? How fast can you reload?
3)Be aware of your down range-Where is the bullet going if you fire at a certain wall. Is it going into the kids room? Will it hit the neighbors dog house? I have actually changed the furniture in rooms that I was staying in so that I would have a clear shot of the door.
Anybody got anything else that they'd put in.
Oh yeah one more thing, gun locks are stupid. I've seen people carry guns with locks on them because of reasoning that I can't even imagine.
