Where to live around the RRG?

I would put a plug in for Berea. Really, it is the only town in Eastern, Ky where you and your wife could find a peer group, a peer group for your son, work for your wife.
Berea is home to Berea College, a progressive island in a sea of conservativism. There is a lot of ingress of academics from other places. The intelligentsia is there and diverse. The schools are no better or worse than any place else, but the community makes up for it. It is close to the Red- 30 min to the lode.

Beattyville is in one of the poorest counties in the nation too. If you are expecting to make a lot of money then you might be mistaken. With that being said the cost of living is really low too. My former boss was from there and he commuted to Eastern Ky. University daily and earned an income near the 35 grand a year range which put him in the high earners of that community. I think, if I remember correctly, the median income for a family in that community was around 19k a year.

Lancaster is a small, but old town. I think it is the second oldest established town in Ky. It would be more than an hours drive to the Red from there. Probably an hour and half dive if you are used to driving on curvy backroads. Add 15 minutes if you are not.

There might be jobs in Richmond, which has all the amenities of a small city, but is 45 minutes from the southern region (Motherload) and about an hour from Funk Rock in the Red proper. There are private schools in Richmond and EKU is there too. There is a small climbing community here too. So there are partners around with woodys in the garages. EKU has a climbing wall too.

Actuallly, therapists make more money in rural areas. Nursing homes pay well in hard to staff areas, and Beattyville's therapy vendor is very competitive in salary offers. Same would hold true in Lancaster (actually, Stanford is the second oldest town in Kentucky, not trying to be a smart ass, I just know this because I'm from Lincoln County), but you are right about the long drive with curvy roads.

If a person were looking for small town, close to the Red, then Berea would be a good choice. Close enough to the bigger cities, lots of activities there, and JB might be moving back there someday. That alone would intice me to move there!

This may be a bit further than what you were thinking, but if you want:

*Awesome climbing w/in an hours drive
*Medium sized town with stuff to do
*Cost of living = really cheap

Then perhaps think about Knoxville, TN.

45 minutes to Obed (several hundred routes)
2.5 hours to Red (Southern Region)
2-3 hours to: All climbing in NC, Foster Falls, LRC, Little River Canyon, Rocktown... I could keep going
