It is about more than sexism caribe, although you are right than sexist parents created much of the evil. But it is about the government taking away reproductive rights, forcing people to have abortions, etc....
Even if man-made global warming exists, I'd rather deal with those impacts before I would submit to the government telling me how to breed.

I've been a gumby longer than you've been climbing.
Sooner or later, one way or another, like it or not, this is what it will come down to. Whether it is global warming or water shortages due to aquifer drainage in the western middle or ______ we are going to have to decrease the human impact. China did not mandate abortion (as far as I know). The government simply said your second child will not be educated by the government for free, but you will still have to educate him or her. Raising the level of responsibility very quickly changes the equation. For most people two kids broke the bank. I am getting this information from a few students who reproduced while in the USA and were faced with the hardship of returning to China. Repatriation even though the family is now too big by Chinese standards was no problem, but continuing the education of the children through university of course would be a big problem.michaelarmand wrote:Even if man-made global warming exists, I'd rather deal with those impacts before I would submit to the government telling me how to breed.

I agree that more education = a reduction in the number of children a person has, but it goes deeper than just education. What would really help is to remove the religious stigma attached to birth control and convince people that free IUDs are a good thing. There are a lot of women in the U.S. that do not want to have another child but are told by there religious leaders that they will go to hell if they use birth control.
As for abortions in china, I found this statistic in the NEJM
"The use of these long-term methods keeps abortion rates relatively low, with 25 percent of women of reproductive age having had at least one abortion, as compared with 43 percent in the United States"
New England Journal of Medicine

In theory, perhaps.Shamis wrote:Education is the only solution. The more educated people are, the less they reproduce.
Most of the 'overpopulation' in terms of people having too many babies is happening in Africa, not China. It goes back to farming--you have children to help you do work. So, you have lots of them. Back when USA's population was 75% farmers (instead of the 2% it is now), we did the same thing.
Educated or not, you still need to eat. what comes first--dinner or a school?

It has been enforced at the providence level, so sure in some areas things are lax, but in others not so much. And violating the policy can carry large fines....and if you are a poor chinese worker and don't have any money....
This is a major human rights issue, I am shocked we are even debating it.
