I think the guy at the gear shop likes selling ropes. I have an 8 year old rope that has been used plenty and I'm still taking lead falls on it. Although I may be a morongripster wrote: otherwise the guy at the gear shop tells me that a rope has a shelf life of 5 years even if unused.

i'm surprised you guys have made it this far in life without ever encountering the idea of liability before. let's not play games. you know exactly why they say 5 years.
this is a distribution. if this were real (about climbing ropes, which it is not), you would interpret it as such:
"most ropes appear to last 10 years (average). yes, some ropes will last for 16 years....but this is what we call antecdotal evidence, and we don't care about that. or, at least, we're not gonna assume that this is the 'rule'. same as if you had one of those shitty petzl ropes that last for 3 days."
