Equipment and Rope

I think the guy at the gear shop likes selling ropes. I have an 8 year old rope that has been used plenty and I'm still taking lead falls on it. Although I may be a moron

i am sure that he does, and i do not necessarily agree with him on that point. he also told me that a climbing rope has never reportedly broken before (they have been cut) so whats to worry about right?

i'm surprised you guys have made it this far in life without ever encountering the idea of liability before. let's not play games. you know exactly why they say 5 years.

this is a distribution. if this were real (about climbing ropes, which it is not), you would interpret it as such:

"most ropes appear to last 10 years (average). yes, some ropes will last for 16 years....but this is what we call antecdotal evidence, and we don't care about that. or, at least, we're not gonna assume that this is the 'rule'. same as if you had one of those shitty petzl ropes that last for 3 days."
