Tape Gloves

Post by Cleveland »

Does anyone have any beta for making tape gloves last? It seems as if when it gets this humid they come unwrapped halfway up the route. I was just wondering if there was a better kind of tape or if you should use some kind of adhesive. Any info would help.

i saw an article in climbing a couple of years ago where tommy caldwell demonstrated his preferred method for taping up. here are a few methods, maybe one of them will work for you:

http://monsteroffwidth.com/climbing-mis ... loves.html

http://www.trails.com/how_1649_tape-han ... mbing.html

Also I use Metolius climbing tape. Maybe it is just me but it seems to work better than standard athletic tape. And the package also has instructions for different taping methods.

You have one other option I know of, but it is almost certain that people will make fun of you for it. They are called hand jammies, and they are well, super gay (if you didn't already guess that from the name). I have never tried them nor do i know anyone who has, but they might work. Perhaps someone who reads this board has tried them and can give you the low down. Anyway, here they are:

Good luck to you.

I know how to tape up, i just don't know how to make them stay on in the heat. The heat almost melts the adhesive on the tape.

I followed the instructions posted by Charles Tanzen here:

http://www.tradgirl.com/climbing_faq/training_2.htm

The instructions take forever to follow, but the gloves seem to be holding up really well so far, I think the direction the tape is layered in helps prevent unrolling.
He recommends finishing the gloves with a sewing machine, which seems to me would make them nearly indestructible.

Also, If the tape is unrolling off of your skin, Tincture of Benzoin will help to secure it, but I don't know if it will help tape to stick better to itself...

Amen to the tincture.
