True! And to cut down on immediate problems, lets kill off all mentally challenged, old and sick right now! Oh, and all minorities too.KD wrote:I think that healthcare should be based upon achievement and privilege.

lets put all fat people on treadmills that are connected to power generators and make them spin until they are no longer fat. This way, we get rid of obesity and the energy crisis at the same time.

We love you charlie, so hopefully the insulin you need is generic and cheap. Otherwise Obamacare just may not cover you.
In Canada and many other socialized medicine countries expensive cancer drugs are not available because they cost too much. So the governement decides basically how much your life is worth, and if it can afford to keep you around. Lets pray we don't head in that direction.....

I've been a gumby longer than you've been climbing.
My little sister, who is also insulin dependent and lives in Canada, may challenge your misinformed and fractured understanding.
Singlepayer healthcare isn't really much different in practice other than how efficient 80% of the services are. They focus on preventative care, costs are much lower for most everything, and more often than not people get the coverage they need.
My sis still pays for her pharmaceuticals (tho it's hella less than what I pay here). Essentially you break your arm or get the flu, you get help. You fight terminal cancer or full blown AIDS, it's going to cost you, and it should.
Fearmongering and politics have so corrupted everyone's understanding of this issue it makes me sad. I'm not going to bother with facts describing how our system is so inefficient it's practically absurd when viewed in terms of per capita tax dollars spent and how our national quality of healthcare is far from the top of industrialized nations. I wouldn't want to make anyone actually think about this stuff.
Oh yeah, I have been on the same insulin for 10 years. It now costs me 3 times as much as it did (copay) and retail price has gone up closer to 500%. I also have one of the best insurance policies you can get in this country.
Healthcare should not be a for profit business. Capitalism is productive in some venues, and absolutely evil in others.

Charlie - I'm not picking on Canada - they have decent health care, I just think what we have here in the US is better. And you are right, Canada is more efficient in terms of the % of GDP they spend on health care. But part of the way they achieve that is by rationing care. It is undeniable. How many Americas go to Canada to get a triple bypass surgery - none. Wealthy Canadians and Europeans come to the US to get top notch surgeries that they would not be able to get back home.
When I tore my knee up, I got an MRI in 2 days, and surgery a week later. That kind of quality of healthcare never happens with socialized medicine. This if from 2005 - but take a read (Canadians waiting 47 days average for an MRI):

So as you can see Charlie, if I lived in Canada who knows how long it would have taken for me to get my knee surgey - those of us with health care have a lot to lose!
And do you really think the goverment can do anything more efficiently than the private sector?
