I think Anticlimber is on to something with the shit eating dogs. A few years back I was a ways past Wall of Denial when the last nights Chipoltle black bean burrito sprinted through my colon, slid through my rectum like grease lightning, and pounded furiously at my anus. No way to make it to the toilets at the trailhead, so I let it fly away from the cliffline. I was bushwhacking in a remote area, so I selfishly just left it as is. I came back a week later with my GF and dog to do a climb that I had scoped out there. Anyway my dog was off leash and next thing I hear is my GF's horrified voice chastising him. It didn't phase him and I got a glimpse of the bean studded log as he gobbled it up. So I had a pissed off GF and dog farting noxious fecal fumes in the tent that night. I have never left unburied waste again. Yeah....it was a probably too long of a story. Anyway, bury your poop if you don't want your dog eating it or bring your shit eating mutt to the ML to help with the sanitary clean up effort.
I never poop at the crag. I just go before I head out and I'm good for the day. I realize not everyone is quite as regular, so it really needs to be a combination of things to clean up the crags.
Post signs at popular crags and at miguel's to increase awareness
Waste cans at popular crags for WAG bags (or whatever brand) are also a good idea, but who will empty those cans?
Pit toilets or porti-potties are NOT a good idea. Both for maintenece, as the webers said, and location. If someone has to poop at the crag, are they really going to walk back to the parking lot to poop. People are lazy.
Shovels at the popular crags arent a terrible idea, they might even get used a bit!
Self-policing is defnintely going to help. I know its awkward to lecture people at the crag, especially about defecating, but I feel like its the best way to get through. Start with your friends that poop at the crags. Bring a shovel for them to use.
The solution starts wtih ourselves, then our friends, then outward.
