Does a "TRAD RULES" mentality = weakness?
Seems like most people I have met with a "sport climbing is so gay! I only climb cracks and never clip bolts because bolt clipping if for chuffers" attitude are the same people who's cams I snag out of 5.9 cracks they bail off. In theory, to climb difficult rock climbs, no matter what style, one must be strong and sport climbing is the best way to get such fitness. Also, someone who climbs hard has appreciation for hard movement and would thus enjoy sport climbing as well. Finally, this mentality is an old school one and we all know old school=weak sauce. While I am sure there are some exceptions to this, anyone ever encounter a lot of people that climb hard (5.12 and up) trad and refuse to sport climb.

also it should be mentioned that trad climbing pioneers (skinner, piana, honnold, sjong, caldwell) not just sport climbed for training but enjoyed it.

this debate hasnt gotten old at all..... i bet we get some great insight on the topic. i cross my legs and giggle with aniticipation.
dude if your gonna go fishing in the same pond everyday you gotta change your bait sometimes.
maybe we should talk if jesus is real, atc or gri-gri or dogs at the crag. now that would be something sweet and fresh.
at least you took the time to organize such a piece and have only had to go back and change your thesis twice.

Well I only know one guy who can climb trad and sport 5.12 each and he really doesn't care which he climbs and he makes it known....
As for myself, I got into trad for a couple of reasons....One, when I moved to WV the guys I hung out with all climbed trad, secondly I got into it because of the lure of adventure, more remote places higher peaks etc. However in the beginning I was a sport climber only...Of course now I do both.

Lets play the "who is rustyvasectomy" game. This sounds much more fun than this played out crap. Based on their writing style I am going to assume they were poorly educated. Probably no college, or a crappy one at best. They probably grew up in a shitty town, which is why they have so much pent up angst. I am guessing Dave Lins.

No Mr. Rusty. I have not come across any people that climb hard trad and not boulder. This is a very convincing argument, you hit the nail on the head. Thank you for proving that a "Trad rules" mentality does not equal weakness.rustyvasectomy wrote: In theory, to climb difficult rock climbs, no matter what style, one must be strong and bouldering is the best way to get such fitness.
