Dana, it actually sounds like you are doing well... Just keep working at it and pushing it. Like tutu said, IB is good. Anything that is an NSAID should help, I've found different types work better for different people. I'm a fan of Alleve, I have buddies who use Motrin effectively.

One thing I do for icing, wet a paper towel and put that on the affected area, then the ice. Only ice for about 10-15 minutes, then let the knee warm up again, then ice it again (continue these intervals for a little while)... This really helped me out (still does when I get swollen from time to time).

As for standing around a lot, I do too. Just wear comfortable, cushioned shoes (not sandals or Chacos, etc.), and it should reduce the wear and tear on your knee. I hope!

interesting article in 'Nature' this week about how developing embryos need to 'flex' their joints to stimulate the pathways that alert (proliferating) cells to form muscle instead of cartllage.....
