BTW, one of the nicest down to earth people I ever met was Lynn Hill, and I would say climbing is her life. I didn't treat her like some God when I met her, and she didn't treat me like some peon because I was climbing .10s. We just talked, and I think that we both appreciated that.
As that good ol' rascist statement goes... She was good people.

whatahutch, I am not at all offended, you're just not making sense or at least I need more clarification. You said, "Life is not climbing and climbing is not life", yet you met Lynn Hill and admire her and clearly climbing is her life, that is who she is and I would bet she would agree. And again you make these bold absolute statements about how we all approach climbing - sounds like you are trying to work things out for yourself. Why would any sport or pastime need to have a black and white life application? Climbing taught me tons of important life lessons. "Therefore all climbing does is blow up egos." Again who are telling this to youself or us? I am not even going to touch your whole tithe to the RRGCC as you tithe to the church  But to say I give regularly to the RRGCC and its money way better spent than to any church.

You think paying 10% off the top makes you dedicated? Psssh, it makes you obligated, that's about it.

I am just saying that if climbing is your whole life sell yourself out completly to it. Give the ten percent. Sorry that I jacked this thread! Maybe we need a new one.
Titled; Is climbing your whole life, and is your ego bigger because of it?
I guess at the heart of it I just don't have much respect in my heart for the person that dedicates his life to one pursuit and that is it. (I know this is wrong). Whether it is climbing, or chess. To me there is too much in life to be so singularly focused. Sure, Hill was nice, but would I select her walk in life for myself, no. I value seeing my family on a regular basis. I like playing other sports, (I have had more fun being punched in the face then I have when climbing).I would suggest that you can learn a lot from anything you do. I would say you can learn more from branching out in life.
I climb because I enjoy the physical challenge and mostly the outdoor location of the sport. I love hanging out with all my friends, even those that don't climb.

I do think its dangerous to make climbing your whole life. One bad injury, or the injury known as old age could take your whole life away.
