i see you have run yourself in a circle. maybe i can help.
the smacking and clapping sounds were not a figment of your imagination, but they came from the rope side, not the brake hand. that's why you kept getting short-roped. so now you have 2 excuses!

my belayers are perfectly incompetent with their rappel devices and prefer to use them over the grigri because it saves weight on the approach and allows them to carry an assortment of trad gear they have no intention of using

I'm accidentally choosing to climb all the most sandbagged, hardest 11b's in the Red right now (oh how I hope this is true)!
