I'm planning a trip to Red Rocks and I was wondering whether to get the Roxanna Brock / Jared McMillen guide or the Greg Barnes Supertopo guide. What do you think?
I just got back and it seems that the guidebook the posters above recommended is the best and most comprehensive. The Supertopo book is good but limited. Like other Supertopo books, it is very detailed; however it does not have that many routes in it. It covers a lot of the classic trad lines, but has very little sport.
Some of the best sport routes are not in any of the books but you will find this books has quite a few new routes that have been kept secret for some time.
Get the Handren Guide. It is the most comprehensive. The Brock guide is horrible with bad beta. Supertopo is good if the route that you are doing is in it.
when i went, i bought 1 guide (brock) and borrowed 2 or 3 others. i have trouble enough finding/following trails in the woods - let alone in the desert. having several guides to compare the directions they gave for getting to a particular wall helped me.
none of them were as good as our guide book though!

Yeah those desert trails are tricky because its tough to tell the difference between a fork in the trail or just a random wash . And following footprints doesn't help because there are countless people before you that take the wrong path too.
