Remember those 655,000 "excess deaths" in Iraq?
oh god day, I am glad you think we play by the bookL Day wrote:That said it is not the right that accuses the U.S. of:
Imperialism
Genocide
Carpet bombing innocent civilians
Marines murdering civilians in cold blood
655,000 civilians dying as a result of U.S. action in Iraq
Etc.
Imperialism has two meanings; one describing an action and the other describing an attitude.
1. Action: Imperialism is the practice of extending the power, control or rule by one country over areas outside its borders. The areas so controlled or ruled may be called that country's empire. Colonialism is a variety of imperialism in which the controlled areas are formally declared to be its "colonies" or "protectorates". Imperialism is also used to refer to situations where the mode of control is less formal ; for instance where the dominant country's influence or control in the subordinate areas is economic, not involving overt territorial conquest.
2. Attitude: Imperialism is the attitude of superiority, subordination and domination over foreign peoples.
Genocide: Just because its not our soldiers, does not mean it is not our agenda. I don't believe in it, but I am sure glad to have an ample supply of toilet paper. When I get sent straight to hell, I am not going to pretend that I don't even know why.
Carpet bombing, I don't have examples of that, and as far as 675,000 excess deaths, well, I agree, every researcher can support his/her agenda. Hell, tobacco is not addictive according to some studies. While the number may high, I don't really doubt that a large number of civilians have died, number probably at least an order of magnitude or two larger than those of 9/11. And most of the time these reports don't include diarrhea, and they don't have the imperialistic capabilities to supply enough toilet paper, or for that matter, clean water to prevent dehydration.
How you compare may not be as important as to whom you are compared
I think the definition of Imperialism found in the dictionary is more accurate and useful than the expansive definition found in Wikipedia.
The only "agenda" that any researcher is supposed to have is the pursuit of the truth. And he is supposed to support this "agenda" with facts, not lies.
This researcher's study didn't pass the smell test. To produce his number of "excess deaths" the U.S. would have to have been responsible for the deaths of 500 civilian Iraqis per day, every day, for the four years that the war had been going on at that point. People used those numbers to de-legitimize everything that the U.S. was trying to do in Iraq. Those people weren't on the right, though many people on the right opposed the war.
Now it turns out that the researcher refuses to reveal his methodology. Why? because his numbers are bull shit, that's why.

Nothing puts a bigger smile on my face than a pissed off Conservative Republican. I hope they are just as unhappy for the next 4 years as I was the previous 8.
Regardless if the death toll is 655,000 or 65,500 we're still talking about a huge number of innocent deaths caused by George "Dubya" Bush.

Actually, Rasputin, I'm rather happy that at least one lieing SOB "researcher" is being called out.
And I don't know, but it may be the Dems that end up getting most pissed off with The One.
"The Obama administration is legally defending a last-minute rule enacted by President George W. Bush that allows concealed firearms in national parks."
For the record, I think the big spending, lieing assed, tax cheating, unpatriotic, and corrupt Democratic party is only slightly worse than the brain dead, incompetent, big spending, and corrupt Republicans.

I don't usually bother to read political posts, but there's an opinion I can agree with. Got little use for politicians.L Day wrote: For the record, I think the big spending, lieing assed, tax cheating, unpatriotic, and corrupt Democratic party is only slightly worse than the brain dead, incompetent, big spending, and corrupt Republicans.

A friend at worked claimed to be a member of the "vote the bums out party". It may be something he made up, but he simply always votes against the incumbent. If we all did this corrupt politicians would never have time to screw things up quite so bad....
I've been a gumby longer than you've been climbing.
