his role was to be a key figure in health care reform, the issue and the people who can hopefully address it are greater than one person, Daschle dropped the ball, Obama stumbled, realized his mistake, took ownership, apologized and its time to move on... Obama will learn from this mistake unless of course it ends up being true that he actually did blow his way through Harvard... just kidding

Sorry, he raised the issue to his accountant in June. Mistake not caught by his accounting firm, IRS, or his company which failed to provide a 1099. You're probably right though, he more than likely planned on not paying those taxes from the outset.

Still seems pretty proactive to me, but let's not question the fact this unquestionably disqualifies one of the most qualified HHS nominee's in recent history.

Whatever, everyone makes mistakes (planned or not) and has to live with the consequences. I just hope they (we) get someone that's as qualified as he was.

the voters in his home state didn't seem to think he was qualified to maintain his senate seat if its any consolation

Where does a public servant find $100,000.00 plus to pay back taxes so quickly? Sounds dirty to me.

He's been in the private sector for the last 5 years, working as a lobbyist, reportedly making close to 2 Mil a year.

Insider agendas were the only things that concerned me w/ him being nominated, but 30 yrs in public service, history of non-partisan politics, willingness to take an enormous pay cut, and clear expertise in the field trumped all that for me. Just my opinion of course.
