J.H., Weekend in French is actually 'fin de semaine' which literally translated means 'end of the week'.

Many North American French dialects (acadians in Canada, and those in Louisiana etc) use english words and pronouce them with French pronouciation. However the word 'weekend' would not be recognized in France, nor would it be used in proper conversation...likely only slang or relaxed coversation.

I guess in Canada it is not politically correct to say weekend while speaking french. In France, we say weekend ALL the time: even politician use weekend for the most part.
Other words in french that the french have "borrowed":
cool.
ok.
parking.
surf.
etc...

It's always interesting to see how many words have been borrowed from the french for the US.

What really blew me away: some people in France do not like americans, yet those same people constantly enjoy american goods, american expressions, etc...

Pretty funny to see the same thing in the US though.

I agree with you, we use many words and sayings in both cultures all the time. My boyfriend and his family are Acadians and french is their first language. They also use 'Weekend' all the time, however, when they speak to me or are teaching others, they usualy stick to the proper 'fin de semaine'. Not sure why. Just like they pronouce 'Je suis bien' when speaking properly...instead of the casual (sounds like) 'shuis bien' while speaking with friends and family....same thing...just the pronounciation.....

Hey..we use....'climber' all the time insead of faire de l'escalade. we also use all of those terms that you mentioned.

Many french climbers at the red? It will be fun to still be able to speak French while we are on vacation!

I have only briefly met 3 french speakers at the Red.
2 of them were from France (one was rude), and the other one was that place... oh, yeah, I remember: Canada (she was pretty cool)

Essentially, I haven't been speaking french (in the 2 years I have been in the state of KY)

yes....our accents are 'all-messed-up"......

we say lots of weird things...

it is 'some good'
instead of out and about....it usually comes out something like 'out in a boot'..... (don't ask..)

how about 'busier then a one legged cat trying to bury its shit on a frozen pond'

or.... 'where ya to?' or 'where ya at' ?? instead of ..where are you?

the list goes on...and on.......and on.......
