Beckey is very inspiring!
You just never know. One year at comp in Cincy I belayed a 88 year old who spent the year recovering from a stroke. The weekend before she jumped out of an airplane for the first time!
How long do you plan to climb?
flash 12c in Alabama???are you having dreams about me again jabba? I have never even climbed in Alabama...
on another note, the elder statesmen at our gym is in his early 70's, and has struggled with prostate cancer for 4-5 years. 2years ago, he had triple bypass surgery, and was climbing again at the gym in 8 weeks...unbelievable! Now to his credit, this dude has ran like 30 marathons, and even completed some 50 mile events in his 60's..
two weeks ago, as I stood and talked to him, he told me the doctors told him he was losing his fight to cancer, and that they were about out of options. From our talk, I took that to mean that his life is now down to months, and no longer years....with a smile on his face, he said "and I'll still be climbing until I can't pull myself in here..."
Perry Holman, you are a great friend and an incredible man.

Actually, for the young climber in this story, the connection didn't click while he was in the Estes Park McDonalds. It was after he got back home and saw Fred's picture in the Black Diamond catalog that the connection clicked and he had his Oh Shit moment.andy_lemon wrote:captain static wrote:Young climber to old man in line wearing UC Mountaineering Club t-shirt: "Sir, may I ask where you got that t-shirt?"Old man in gruff voice: "Why do you ask?"
Young climber: "Because I'm in the UC Mountaineering Club."
Old man: "I got it from Alex Cudkowicz."
Young climber: Sir, may I ask your name so that I can tell Alex I saw you next time I see him?"
Old man: "Yeah, my name's Fred, Fred Beckey"
and the reply was...
"Thank you sir. Excuse me while I go shit myself."
