I would like to know how many are pro american occupation of iraq, but anti- american occupation of america. Personally, I think its silly, but I will no likely do anything but write a letter to my congressman.

also, I wonder what kind of authority they would have. Would they be expected to hold up local law too, if someone whipped out a doob would they be obliged to pursue.

Pretty ignorant response, there. The National Guard does humanitarian works. When your grandmother is snowed in with no power out in the middle of nowhere, we send someone to pick her up and take her somewhere safe. We do not police.

Katrina was close to policing, but the thugs of New Orleans were to thank for that. The first units down there went unarmed and were at the mercy of the idiots down there. Helicopters were getting shot at. Supply trucks were being hijacked.

That prompted governors to halt aid unless something was done. Bush retroactively federalized the troops. That was a start, but we still could not defend ourselves. For that, Posse Comitatus had to be suspended. Once that happened we were allowed to defend ourselves and governors resumed plans to send aid.

The National Guard is not a federal police unit. We are funded and operated at the state level.

Obama let these plans slip out during the campaign and they were the scariest words to come out of his mouth. This must be stopped at all costs even if it means the republicans read every volume of the encyclopedia to prevent a vote...

Should have read the WashPost link, mistakenly assumed it was yet another thread on the Civilian National Security force, WashPost sometimes being a nice paranoia blog.

From what I've read his thoughts on said program would run very similar to the National Guard missions.

Way before my time, but that sounds about right. Not sure of how the protests at Kent State were, but I've heard stories about how violent the "non-violent" protests were at the University of Kentucky. Glass bottles, rocks, just about anything with weight behind it, hurled at soldiers from the crowd.

My old motor sergeant hates the University of Kentucky because of how he was treated when he was there for the protests. They were there protecting the campus, but UK would not allow them to use any of their facilities. No bathrooms. No water. No cafeterias. Nothing...but they took sandwhiches to the protesters.

No real point there, just a story, I guess...

These kids were picked off at about 75 yards. That doesn't sound like much of a violent threat to me. Never knew about conditions at the Ky campuses. Just know they got a bit out of hand with building take-overs at schools like UC- Berkeley, thus made somebody trigger happy the next time around.

I calmed down and decided I'm not going to leave the country, but I will have all my paperwork in order so that I can if needed. I realized that, being white middle class I would be an unlikely target for genocide. Still, I don't think I want to hang around for it to happen.
