Driving access pass to Muir Valley floor?

Post by OH_Climber »

I have seen vehicles parked at the bottom of Muir Valley (thereby avoiding a big chunk of the brutal hike) a few times while climbing there. Is there some kind of access pass you can buy for this privilage? A buddy of mine wants to try real rock climbing with me (he's been to the indoor gyms before) and I think Practice Wall is his best bet for now given fitness level. He was in a pretty severe car accident about a year ago and after many surgeries and a lot of painful therapy is just now getting around fairly well. I think he could make it out to Practice Wall from the bottom of the valley with rest breaks, probably not from the parking lot, and no way he'd make the hike back out. He went through a long period of being depressed and sloth-like; so I'd hate to shoot down his hope to climb.

Car passes are given out to route developers at Muir Valley. Talking to Rick Weber about your situation will get you much further than posting anything here. Another option is to go to Sore Heel. The access there is pretty short and not too steep (go up the road, not the path from the parking lot). I went up there with a friend who was using a cane b/c she'd been in an accident and we got around alright. good luck.

OH_climber,

Send me a PM with details, and we will give you a vehicle pass for your friend and instructions on access. No, you don't have to buy it; it's free. We have issued several of these to climbers with physical restrictions. You will need a 4-wheel drive vehicle.

I don't care what everyone says about you, Rick, I think you're ok.

I generally try to refrain from my juvenile behavior when it involves honest questions posed to Rick or any land owner for that matter. But seriously piggy, do you have to make it so easy?

i agree. a big mouth sounds like a benefit as it allows for a lot of air to be taken into the lungs. kinda like a cold air intake on a car.
