How about someone completely untying themselves to thread the rope for lowering without clipping themselves in and not realizing what they were doing. Saw that last weekend.

DriskellHR, Rock climbing is a dangerous sport and that is the risk you assume when you decide to participate. I am responsible for my own safety and the safety of the inviduals I choose to climb with. I am not morally or legally responsible for individuals who chose an activity in which they are not skilled in doing. That does not mean I will not act on bystander apathy, but no one is responsible for the ignorance of another individual.

I did not say you were responsable FOR them just to say somthing TO them. Besides if someone gets hurt and you happen to know what to do be it rescue, save or whatever, you will not help? If you answer is "of course i'll help" then would it hurt to offer some friendly advice to another climber to keep the whole thing from happening? these are the ethics I go by that were taught to me. Some were taught another way, neither is right or wrong.

But of course this is just the way I roll, you may not feel the same.

Thats cool

I'm with Driskell here. Why wouldn't you try to keep an accident from happening? That is the real access issue. People get hurt bad and the fs and privater owners are much more cautious about what they let happen. Wes, who cares about the hardware? Are you serious? Everyone is inexperienced at one point or another. If they don't listen, right on. But I sure wouldn't let something go on that was going to get someone hurt and at least not say something.

i'll deal with them like everyone else.
either - calm, nice, non-condescending manner

or - tell it like it is, point-blank, and stare at them til the desired trait is changed or the people move elsewhere.

you can catch bees with vinegar but they are a whole bunch meaner after a mouthful of it.

well i've always been one to say something. i know i appreciate it when someone lets me know i'm being dumb. but this past weekend was the first time i got the "f-you" type of response. made me think maybe i was wrong to say something - and it made me want to re-evaluate whether or not i keep my mouth shut.

andrew, you're right about yasi! she's awesome at that.

it depends on how you put it to the folks. also i have seen people with little experience try to tell someone with less how something should be done. thats hard to swallow.

hell i've had people tell me a way that they read is better than the way i've been doing it for years AFTER trying all the others. its a hard egg to crack.

if they say "fuck you" just tell them, "not with that shitty attitude and poor technique/."
