Top Roping

Post by Pennt50 »

Hello,

I am fairly new to the Red River area. I climbed there about 15 or so years ago. My buddy actually is responsible for naming the now gone "Love Shack". Anyway, I would love to get my kids into climbing and I back into it. My son is 14 and my daughter is 11.

I need some advice on where to go. I have limited gear and would like to find an area that we could set-up a top rope with some good routes any suggestions?

Thank you,

Kevin

Muir Valley. Practice wall. :D
What I love about running is you can meditate while running. It's a peaceful place.

When are you looking to climb?

I don't know of many places were setting a TR by yourself without leading is possible, though I am sure there are some... anyway, if you are climbing in a popular spot, and you ask nicely, and your kids aren't annoying, and you don't monopolize the route hanging all day, and the people around you are nice, and you have draws for the top and your own rop... then normally someone will be nice enough to clean their gear and put yours up, I know I have done it many times... but once again, don't expect people to just do it for you, a please and thank you is always nice...

Yeah dipsi said it....Practice wall is a good place to start. You will need to lead I believe but its nothing hard at all. Or you can go flint's route and ask someone nicely. I would hang a rope for ya if I was in Ky.

If you are confident leading some other easy route IMO are the ones on the far side of Roadside...all cows eat grass, trouble clef....those are fun and easy although taller than the practice wall and may scare the kiddies.

Have fun!!!

You don't really have to lead to put up a top rope at practice wall, just solo kates first trad. That thing is like climbing a 20ft ladder.

There is a 5.1 trad rout at practive that is super easy to solo and from there you can tr two or three other routs.

You can also walk up at Practice Wall, if you go to the left, and well, walk up.
