It might be too much trouble but one option that would allow people to still start as many political threads as they want and some others to not see them is to make a new politics forum under the pit category and allow registered users to unsubscribe from individual forums they are not interested in. I don't know if the code for this is built in but at least it's an idea. I guess it would also need to only show posts from forums one is subscribed to when searching etc. In principle it could also reduce load on the search engine.
Not sure if there's a phpbb mod for that, but vbulletin would solve all of these problems in a hurry. People could bury their heads in the sand with ease.

I have seen three people post that they do not like the political thread and many more that either enjoy them or do not care one way or the other. Just like with sports threads that I ignore, if you don't like politics, don't read the political threads. Its that simple. I think it is good, if not important to get peoples opinions on these issues. I don't think that any of the thread have been negative even if they are used to bash a politician. They still help to expose or bring to light issues that may be important to consider when determining who is going to run this country for the next 4 years. God knows that last 8 have been f'ed up.
How you compare may not be as important as to whom you are compared

A new forum entitled something like inflammatory talk might be a good place to put all political and religious banter. When you log on, instead of ordering the new posts by time, order them by forum and put this one last.

So, maybe lets try this for a couple weeks to see how it goes: Any political link or quote etc can go into a political links thread. Any original, reasonably well thought out, political thoughts can go into a new thread in the suck forum, but try to limit the new thread to topics that are not just political spam, save those for the the political link thread, or just don't post them. That should cut down on the new and useless threads, give a place for the cut and paste, regurgitated junk, and still allow actual thoughts and ideas to be exchanged.

Is this workable for the few of you that are really into the politics?

I'm not understanding why we're making this change to accommodate the preferences of a minority of the users of the site.

Actually, Josie, according to your very own poll, 12 people would like a change, 10 would like it to stay the same, and it doesn't matter to 4 with 26 total votes. So, I am not great at math, but that looks like a majority asking for a change of some kind.

But, truthfully, I don't care enough to deal with it. I don't want to be an admin of rc.com, which is what this place is these days. So, post/spam/meatbomz/etc away!

i must have misread the results

i thought 4 people wanted the proposed change and 18 people wanted to talk about politics either in previous forum or new forum and 4 people didn't care.

guess that goes to show that even numbers are not as unbiased as I would like to believe.
