the cost of climbing

when i realized i was spending $250/month in gas to climb + putting an extra 20,000 miles/year on my car - i decided it was time to move to lex. granted, when i actually get there is anybodys guess. but that should help with the cost - eventually.

The worst part is that for me to drive to KY right now from CA should cost me around $1000. EEEK!

I saved alot of money not going to the Red much last year. I'm on track to do the same this year so I'll take a week at Seneca and get in some multipitch.

I had my gear ripped off when I was working for torrent. then it was stolen out of my truck!! so I had to buy all new gear 3 times!! now the shit is insured no more of that crap, but man it was costly$$$$$$

Gas prices are the worst......it will be $4.00 a gallon by the end of the month. Hit that in California from what I read. Just another reason to take a few long vacations instead of climbing every weekend!

Climbing can be quite costly indeed, but by the time I got all the free gear I needed from Driskell's car, I really only had to pay for gas and some snacks.

Guys and Gals, we have barely even scratched the surface of the so called "cost of climbing". I want to hear about the relationships ruined, injuries, buddies who lost it all for the glory. Who the fuck cares about gas we all know its going up and will continue to cost us more (money) to do all this point less shit we call climbing. What about the other costs, that really matter?
I'll start, after nearly losing all my fingers and spending 10 days in a french hospital and 60+ at home recovering from frostbite all i could think about was the next mountain, next cold ass place i wanted to go to and climb. Needless to say, my girlfriend at the time didn't like to hear about the "next big adventure" i was planning while sitting around helpless with wrapped hands. Relationship ends, new one begins, I become a little less excited about alpine but super jacked on sport climbing and trad going every weekend-after 3 months with the new lady we have "the talk" I'm sure some of you know what I mean, the "you're climbing too much and need to chill" talk. The "I could never REALLY date you" (those are exact words) talk.

Lessons i've learned: it is hard as hell (and only works in very unique situations) to mix your climbing and relationships. Injuries suck, but as long as you come out alive are worth every minute of suffering, you learn a hell of a lot.
The cost I have incurred (broken relationships, injuries) from climbing have been large but for the most part worth it. I guess this brings up the larger question, is the cost of climbing worth it for you?
