Benazir Bhutto claims Osama Dead

Post by endercore »

sorry if this has already been posted, or if you guys already heard about this, just thought I'd bring it up to inspire some interesting discussion. In an interview with David Frost of BBC Benazir Bhutto says "omar shiek- the man who murdered osama bin laden". This sentence was edited out when BBC aired the interview. The interview occurred on 02 Nov 07, shortly before her tragic assassination in December.

you can watch the whole interview from aljazera here. It occurs at about the 6 minute mark.

if you don't want to watch the whole thing, here is a 45 second clip that includes the statement.

There are a few different reactions to take.

1) she mispoke. I have read that some people think she ment to say david pearl- a man that Omar Sheik was in allegedly murdering on Osama's orders. This is obviously the more logical conclusion.

2) she let it slip. This obviously has all kinds of implications. You could go on and on with this viewpoint- the US keeps Osama alive as the "boogyman" to explain away all of its actions in the middle east and the war on terror, or I've even read that Bhutto was assassinated because she "knew".

either way it begs the question why have we not heard this on the news? Why did BBC not play the statement? Why did david frost not stop the interview for clarification. what do you guys think. or, risking a complete other topic- what do you think about Musharraf, recent elections, or Pakistan in general?

Do we claim he's still alive? Do we know? I would not be surprised to fin dout he's been dead for a while. Should him being dead have any effect on the war on terror and/or our actions?

Why can't we have leaders like that? I guess we are no longer fighting for anything but ourselves.

On a derailing note, "Begging the question" is a fallacy in argument meaning circular reason (Petitio Principii). It doesn't mean "raise the question."

I'm guessing we haven't heard about it because he's still alive.

Logic whoo hoo! Gotta continue the derail.
Meadows, illustrating that you truly are a prescriptive grammarian, I am going to have to disagree with using "begging the question" to mean the same thing as circular reasoning. In the strictest sense, circular reasoning is the basing of two conclusions each upon the other. That is, if you follow a chain of arguments, the conclusion of some argument is used as a premise in one of the earlier arguments that eventually led to that conclusion. Begging the question can occur within one argument; and therefore, begging the question occurs if and only if the conclusion is implicitly or explicitly a component of an immediate premise.

Have you noticed that Osamas number two, Zawahiri (sp?) comes out with well produced videos while OBLs vids are old and grainy or they only put out audio and yet supposedly they're hanging out together in Pakistan plotting our destruction. Osama was never camera shy before. Why now? All the same, I think it doesn't make much difference whether he's alive or dead, at this point.
