That would have been a disaster. I think doing this for the islamic population is BS and should not be catered too, same as if it were the christians. I can understand how some women would not want to work out with a bunch of meathead staring at them while pumping iron. Seeing as how this population is likely far smaller than the whole, a simple solution would be to create a smaller (much smaller/but efficient) women only gym in one of the dorms or something.
