Sheltered Crags

Post by rjackson »

It's easy to find crags that are good in the rain, get lots of sun or are rarely visited...but I'm looking for crags that are sheltered from the wind (and preferably get sun). Easy/moderate trad and/or moderate/hard sport.

Which crags in the gorge exemplify these conditions?

Thanks.

U-shaped crags are best sheltered from the wind, such as the lode and roadside, especially towards the back of the cirque. Cliffs that are more straight line and at the top of a hill like sky bridge and funkrock get very windy.

there's no escaping the wind. even remote regions like the crag of your ass experience strong unpredictable gusts of wind that at times can be quite unpleasant

I recommend caving.

Also, I find u-shaped crags to be some of the windiest. The wind accellerates like a ball througha hi li scoop.

Depends on the wind direction at that moment.

The area by Ro Shampo is pretty protected, the back of Left Flank is also recessed as are a few climbs at Phantasia (though shady). I haven't been to any of these places in a 'big' wind - but I suspect they afford some shelter.

No one has anything out there aside from blah-blah, yee-haw, you-gotta-be-f'n-kiddin-me or oh yeah, the wind blows.

I'm just calling out to collective wisdom and experience. Oops, wrong site.

Seriously though, just looking for a few climbs that won't give me wind burn or frost bite while belaying in a 25 degree wind chill.

Thanks again.

that is the experienced wisdom around here, there's no telling what it may do. i've been to the "dry" crags in rain and they've been soaked, been to "sheltered" cliffs that weren't too sheltered, and so on and so forth.

there is never, was never, and shall never be any normal or usual patterns in the gorge, except that everyone that climbs there is an ignorant, slack-jawed, dumb-as-fuck-opinionated, half-witted dim-wit. so there.

and really, in 25 degree wind chill it doesn't matter how much sun is shining; you're losing fingers.

enjoy
