This is great news, but it still doesn't mean the war was a good thing. I want my tax dollars back, or spent on something worth while. Education, science, renewable energy, reducing or dependence on foreign oil, health care, did I say education, lowering taxes without going into increadible debt, helping new orleans, putting out fires, or really anything else. Maybe even Darfur. These are just some suggestions in no particular order.

Andrew - You could be right. The war may have been a huge mistake. But to compound that mistake by deciding to lose the war, like Harry Reid wanted to do, for political advantage, was beyond contempt. I'll never forgive the bastard for throwing his weight behind the surrender movement.

I'm hoping things work out. Two things that worry me:

1. Fundamentalist resurgence in the South, particularly the Sadr brigade and other Shiite groups pouncing on a weak national or regional government. They've been quiet the last few months and have pulled back from the streets. Why? Beyond the peace deals brokered, what other reasons do they have? Iran? Money? It sure ain't fear of breaking a few eggs. Something made Sadr pull his guys back, hopefully it doesn't come back to bite us.

2. Turkish Kurdish relations... Airspace violation by the Turks this weekend to bomb Kurd rebels. What long term implications will there be to a strong regional kurdish government? We can say that they have no plans to declare a state right now, but all it takes is one bonehead to get elected and started spouting about a Kurdish state... and there goes the neighborhood.

The peace is tenuous, and I hope with baited breath that it continues. If it holds, we begin to leave and oil revenues start funding the government and infrastructure growth... Iraq becomes a stable democracy, and hopefully that starts to spread to places like Iran, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia etc. Economic exchange brings lots of other things with it... Look at China and their now limited free market system. Could happen in the middle east... but it is going to take a looooooooong time.

Again, this is all wishful thinking... I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. Hope I'm wrong. Even if there is a resurgence of terrorism, it doesn't mean the country isn't ready. It just means that a couple of boneheads want to ruin it for everyone. Al Qaeda is capable of striking out there... just like here. They came to the US and did what they did, and we weren't even in the middle of a conflict like Iraq. Just shows that nutjobs can be nutjobs anywhere... downtown Basra, Madrid, New York...

Okay, I'm done ranting.
