Your reading comprehension needs a little work.pigsteak wrote:it sounds all high and mighty to deny "god", but by your own accord there is a 50-50 chance he does exist. you are taking a blind leap of, gasp, "faith" that he does not exist.
Atheism
Don't you ever read Piggie? I guess I will make your christmas gift a subscription to Scientific American. We can already measure some of the chemical releases in the brain we call love and some of the neural activity. Saying we won't figure out love or at least learn more about it is as stupid as someone in the 1800's saying we would never learn how a cell physically/chemically replicates itself. Just a couple of quick google searches gave:

The theory of evolution is just as stupid as the theories of gravity and electromagnetism.
ah, but i felt attacked (which is not entirely your fault is it?). maybe it's because I do have faith and your post, even in jest, seemed to belittle belief (and yes, i was making fun of Christians with the whole Golden Compass bit). So maybe also when you feel attacked by believers it is also not totally their fault either. btw... my panties are totally unbunched.heidiramma wrote:No no JB, don't get your panties in a bunch. I did not attack you.

i know that atheists feel attacked by religious nut-jobs trying to take over the world or shoving their beliefs down your throats, but i also feel attacked by religious nut-jobs trying to take over the world, so atheism does not corner the market on being pissed off at bible beaters.
i understand there seem to be more theists than atheists out there, but theists are also not the only ones with an agenda. you atheists here are pushing yours as well. maybe you're the minority for now and that gives you justification (as per shamis' rebuttle of my post) to proselytize your point of view, but that does not justify some of the judgement and hate mongering i feel when it comes to this debate. i get the sense that saxman takes great joy in "proving" his point to pigsteak, but then the whole underlying theme is that nothing can be proved. so it just bothers me that we continue to do anything besides take care of one another.
again, i mean none of you harm and wish you well with your journey, no matter where it takes you (hell, for certain).

Apparently you missed the part where we already said that christmas is a pagan holiday.ynot wrote:So you people that claim to be athiest, do you celebrate Christmas? Any idea what you're celebrating?
For an atheist, christmas is about hanging out with friends and family, and exchanging gifts, eating good food, and random acts of violence. Since we clearly have no moral code to live by, we frequently eat small children and dogs for fun.
There are plenty of intelligent reasonable religious people. However, i'd argue that the bible thumping 'nut-jobs' are in fact adhering more closely to the religion as described in the bible/koran. Those books are nutty. Give the old testament a re-read.JB wrote:i know that atheists feel attacked by religious nut-jobs trying to take over the world or shoving their beliefs down your throats, but i also feel attacked by religious nut-jobs trying to take over the world, so atheism does not corner the market on being pissed off at bible beaters.

Why, I'm celebrating the season, the appreciation of others, the end of the year, a time to rekindle family bonds. There's plenty of people out there that do the same, not even knowing the history of how the holiday came to be.So you people that claim to be athiest, do you celebrate Christmas? Any idea what you're celebrating?
Okay, that's gotta be a joke, because the only way I'm going anywhere is if I choose to - based on my actions and morals. And since I'm fairly alright in that area, I know that things are in my hands, and I'll be just fine.no matter where it takes you (hell, for certain)

The best years of your life are the ones in which you decide your problems are your own.
You do not blame them on your mother, the ecology, or the president.
You realize that you control your own destiny.
