First Trip to RRG

Post by CRZYFST »

Well, not really but the last time I went was over a decade ago back in college and I don't remember squat.

So a group of us are heading down next weekend. I need some suggestions and general information on what all we might need or should take. I am looking more for info on things outside of climbing gear that we will need. Things like sleeping bags, tents, food, general camping gear etc.

I don't know how close we can camp to our vehicle? I don't know what to expect for hiking and how much gear and how far we would need to hike in from say our car etc.

For climbing gear basically we have two ropes, 50 & 60 meter I think. Two sets of 12 quick draws, gri-gris, assortment of webbing and biners, squid, crash pad. We will probably be looking for 5.7 - 5.9 routes, maybe try a 5.10 if we are feeling good :).

So any feedback for first timers I would greatly appreciate.

Thanks

Oh and we are planning on picking up a guide book from our local climb gym. Not sure which one it is but I am sure it will do.

Well, if your are staying at miguels your can will be right next to the camp site. bring a tent, obviously, gets prett cold at night this time of year so a 35 degree bag would probably be ok but 20 or 15 would be prime. you wont need food, miguels has all the pizza and omlettes you could ask for. hiking to the routes are not bad, some good hiking shoes would be nice. other than that some warm clothes, thats all i can think of. have a fun time.

Tossing a crashpad at the bottom of the route isn't a bad idea for a nooby, since they are prolly going to Left Flank and the crux is just getting on those routes.

extra layers of aluminum foil - the normal day-to-day single layer hat won't do - the mind control rays are extra strong at the Red.
