Funk Rock Open !!

Post by RRO »

From Tim :

Hello Climbers,

I wanted to let you know that the closure in Clifty Wilderness for a
wildfire has been lifted. This closure included the area around Funk Rock
City. The fire burned about 18 acres. Most was on the top of cliff above
climbing area, but about 2 acres of fire spilled over the top and burned
some areas at base of cliff and within climb area. Be aware that debris
has fallen off cliff top down into the climbing area. There may be some
debris and ash on the access path at base of cliff.

An official news release will be coming out soon, but I wanted to give you
a heads up.

So has anyone been out to funk rock to observe the damages?

I was just there, and theres very little damage. Most of it was right near the Infidel, and even that was minor, I think. Most of the cliff had a few blackened branches scattered about, but nothing serious.

I was there a couple of days ago and almost got brained with burned debris falling from the top of the cliff line above the slabs. There seem to be quite a few widow makers hanging off the sides too. I wonder how long they will stay where they are, bc they look totally scary. The trails also need some maintenance, but it was way less damage than what I was expecting.
