Tradisfaction

Placing a cam? Slotting a nut? Slinging a tree?

Why is Trad climbing so cool?

Gear. Talk about commitment to climbing, try dropping 500 bucks on a rack. Aren't i-phones like 500 bucks? See what I am say'in. It's cool to pony up for something neat and "useful?".

Counterintuitive. Climbing is pulling on holds. Wrong. This is more intimate, you slip your fingers in the spaces where there are no holds.

Toughness. Not talking about grades here. Everything else. Approaches, route finding, placing gear, removing gear, finding a way down from routes, hauling extra weight, etc. O yeah, Keith Phelps, now thats tough.

Unknown. It just is. If we knew it would cease to be cool.

Justin may talk like a gymrat but he's definitely got some skillz.

Thanks for the props Yasmeen. I have to return the favor. Props for the tutorial on how to properly reduce rope drag with the use of quick draws. Way to style Casual Viewing with your new hottie climbing outfit. Oops, sorry Paul I didn't mean to leave you out. I am sure it was a coincidence that we didn't get to see you climb. Props anyway for being so cute and tough at the same time. You are the mac traddie.

Charlie, those are the greatest pictures I have ever seen. My wife thought something was wrong when I saw them and started screaming. No doubt, trad goes places. Not many great topouts on sport.

odds are he won't live to see tomorrow.

Trad is about twisting your fingers and hands. Sport is about pinching and crimping things. It's all rock climbing. Being away from crowds is one of the advantages of trad climbing at the Red. That's probably not true other places though so I can't say it's an advantage of placing gear.

However, there is something very tough feeling about taking on a burly fist crack and shoving cams into a crack while wearing socks, a mustache, 50 pounds of gear, and a headband.....out in the middle of nowhere.

enoch308, you can thank Eric Cox for the killer shots of Seneca. Ken took the shot of me at the New and Don took the belay shot at Lumpy. So, trad is just as much about partners as it is anything!
