I am sorry to inform everyone that the Funk Rock City we have known will not be the same, at least not in the near future. The Castle Rock fire, as it is called by the US Forest Service, grew to a size of about 18 acres including 1-2 acres at the base of the Funk Rock City cliffline. While the fire was most active fire debris was actually falling of the cliff. Most of the fire has burned out but there is still a burning snag at the base of the cliff according to the Forest Service. I have been informed by the Forest Service that an assessment will be made tomorrow (Friday, 9/21/07) as to whether the area can be re-opened this weekend. Since FRC is in a Wilderness Area the USFS approach to a fire is just to contain it as much as possible and not to take aggressive actions to put the fire out. When I hear more I will post it.

I haven't been out there in a while but I seem to recall that there were a lot of sketchy bolts that weren't being replaced due to a No-Power-Tools rule. I wonder if we could get a waiver for that rule if we mentioned that the fire likely damaged many bolts.
