Its easy to get pulled in to those purchases, after owning a string of junkers (including a ford ranger with 270K miles and no reverse) I dropped $$$ on five year financing on a new truck (cue dumpass emoticon). Did it make me any happier, no in fact it was just more stress. (well not having to push my truck backwards was nice).

Money spent on climbing, was always worth it, even the rainy cruddy days. Shows,Movies, Picking up the tab for friends and family, drunk multi player wii sessions. Money and things won't make you happy but are tools to be used to obtain and provide happiness.

Does having the gym make you happy or does climbing in it?

But Paul would be more happy if he had bought you dinner at Malones.

WOW pawilkes, thanks for giving me some perspective. I too am in a long distance relationship and when I pay my vehilce gas bill every month it can be painful, yet its been worth every penny.

I am with everyone else, all the money I have ever spent on climbing and climbing trips has given me great joy and happiness.

So long as I can pay my bills every month and have a genuine belly laugh everyday, I consider myself very happy and incredibly blessed (no lie).

My education has helped make me happy and I've spent/mortgaged a small fortune for that. In return I have accumulated a large amount of useless knowledge and the ability to provide for myself. It didn't suck.

Climbing has enriched my life more then I could ever expect. Mostly because this meaningless pursuit has put amazing people in my life who I normally would not have met. It's pretty dang awesome.

Happiness is:

1) drop kicking a puppy or kitten.

2) swilling a bunch of 40s with the bros then breaking things.

3) pouring sugar in an enemy's gas tank.

4) finding a short and curly in your McDonald's milkshake.

5) destroying the environment via conspicuous consumption.

6) downplaying the achievements of others.

7) viewing serious calamities on the news.

AND MY FAVORITE
8. the relentless pursuit of money and power, no matter who you hurt to achieve it.
