i've been bouldering a little in morehead but are there any routes trad or sport? is there some sort of guide? Is it even worth a days trip?

is there any other climbing destinations to take a day trip to i love the red but sometimes i get annoyed by the crowds

just go to a crag thats has a longer approach while at the red. there are so many places that do not get traffic, you can be alone on the busiest fall days. obed is a good break away from the red if your around for extended times.

Linville Gorge was lotsa fun. Wasn't crowded at all over labor day.
so was bouldering in Boone was fun too, but there's no guide for that.
if you go there i would do a weekend trip rather than a day trip.

RRO is right - long approaches = little to no traffic.
