The thing to remember is that the needs of children have changed and we must be sensitive to thier needs. play is not important unless you consider how it affects the self-esteem of the child. It's all about getting in touch with your inner feelings. Thats why kids are so active today and will be able to provide for us when we are old - because they are soooo understanding and self aware.

and it really doesn't matter what the parents do, some kids are always going to get picked on. they will find friends one day and life will go on. I can only imagine how much worse it is for the fat kid whose mom stopped tag, that kid will never have friends

Dipsi - had I known you at that age, you can bet I'd've called!

One of my coworkers was talking about how musical chairs has been banned at some schools because of the inner anxiety it causes. I can't count the number of sleepless nights I had when I didn't sit down quickly enough to win a cupcake. I'm glad others don't have to suffer like that.

When I was a kid on summer break we got run out of the house right after breakfast and weren't expected back until lunch. Then we got run out again until supper. I built sappling forts in the woods, built dams, spied on beavers, and put a hammock thirty feet up in a tree to read. We had chores like feeding the animals, pulling weeds, mowing the yard, weedeating under all the fences, chopping wood, cutting wood, y'know, the normal stuff. My dog could stick its nose in a rat hole, inhale repeatedly and draw a rat to it. I swam in the creek and threw rocks at copperheads. My bicycle was really fast and it only took me ten or fifteen minutes to get to my nearest friend's house. It took an hour to walk there if you followed the creek but only about 45 minutes if you cut across the soybean fields and through the woods.
