From: http://www.philly.com/philly/wires/ap/n ... rison.html

"Vermont, New Jersey, Connecticut and Wisconsin incarcerated blacks at more than 10 times the rate of whites, the group said, citing Justice Department statistics from 2005. Vermont had a ratio of 12.5, followed by New Jersey with 12.4 and Connecticut with 12.

States with the lowest black-to-white ratio were Hawaii, with 1.9, Georgia with 3.3 and Mississippi with 3.5."

sad but true, it is merely human nature at work in all of us.
Pigsteak did a pretty good job of summing it up there.

I will just add: people suck, especially the mean ones.

It would be nice if this were true. However, to say that a poor inner city black kid living in a housing project with his great aunt because his mom died from a heart attack at age 20 and his grandmother is in prison (like my neighbor Dominique) is equal to some rich white kid living in Oldham County requires a level of self deception that is bothersome.* They may be "equal" in some kind of hypothetical manner but that inner city kid is standing naked in front of a 2000 meter cliff while the white kid is landing on top in his daddy's helicopter.

You that scream we should be color blind are guilty of a kind of soft racism that is as senseless as the idea that all children can learn at the same rate or that a quadruple amputee can just get up and go for a run. Denial ain't just a river in Egypt any more.

By the way, I lived in New Orleans from 1983-1999 and then a year in Savannah GA so I'm pretty sure I know a little bit about the South. I worked against David Duke's numerous political campaigns over the years, hung out with Mardi Gras Indians, participated in the White Buffalo celebration in Congo Square, jammed with musicians of all skin colors, and swung hammers next to hard working blacks, whites, and Mexicans. One of the main reasons I left Savannah was because I knew I was going to coldcock the next motherfucker I heard say, "God I hate a nigger." Those people were good old "Southerners" that said Grace every night, held the door open for (white) women, and said yes sir and yes ma'am to their (white) elders. I guess if you're rooted in the white collar world you're much less likely to meet these people so I guess you faux Southerners can be forgiven for not knowing the kind of shitballs that are proud to sport a Confederate flag and would toss an empty bottle at a black man walking down the highway. Charlie, do you deny there are plenty of people like that in the South?

*To be racially neutral you can swap this around to some red headed kid living in a lean-to behind his uncle's trailer in Appalachia because the other room in the house is a meth-lab as opposed to Will Smith's kids... if he has any. Appalachian whites (especially those of Irish decent) have experienced much of the same bone crushing poverty and inability to accumulate wealth that their black counterparts in the Delta did.

Thomas Sowell wrote a great book describing why blacks can't get ahead like all the other minorities have. His theory is that after being freed they picked up a bunch of Southern white trash habits and they can't shake it, even after moving elsewhere.

appalachian whites don't have thie racism you speak of however...so perhaps this is more class warfare and not racism you are picking on? but then again, the guys you worked with in Savannah were probably not rich white kids, but blue collar rednecks, so how does that play into your rich/poor hypothetical?

the only real impression you give people Alan, is that you will be pissed off no matter what..in your world, you try to justify your "crusader for the little guy" act. yes, we know you lived in new orleans..I was born in Monroe , La myself. yes we know the "rich daddy" and "dick cheney" are to blame for all your ills. yes we know you sweat your ass off for a living and hate conservative values. yes, we know you hate any semblence of westernized religion, but probably grant Native Americans much reverence for their spirit world. yes we know you have hung with the lowlifes who are perfect citizens but are just misunderstood...

but for god's sake, are you ever happy, content or just plain joyful? I know some very rich people who are very generous with their time and money, but I wouldn't dare speak for all rich people. Bill Gates happens to come to mind as a VERY rich person who happens to also be very philanthropic. As does Geoge Soros. (who is a major Democratic supporter). You seem to have a chip on your shoulder for even those who are working hard, and happen to get some lucky break and have some middle class or upper class wealth. Not every person with a pension fits your one size fits all rage.

that being said, I am glad you are fighting for the underdog, cause for god's sake all I really want to do is go climbing. call me callous or a hypocrite..so be it. I also want to smile a bit and live a life of joy. there are 1,001 injustices in this world at any one time, and I don't have the desire or energy to confront them all.

namaste.

I think he finally realized that doing little leprechaun leaps where he should be high-stepping doesn't = 5.13 climber potential.
