All Passive Rack

Post by abock33 »

So I did a search and couldn't find anything on all passive racks in the red. Why is this?

I'm new to trad and I don't want to fork out the money on cams. My rack includes a set of BD Stoppers (4-13) , Ste of Tri cams (2,3,3.5 and 4-7) and a set of Curved Hexes (1-7) plus a bunch of biners, slings, quickdraws ect.

I'm looking to add to my rack but I don't know if I want to double what I have Like add another set of nuts and more tri cams ( the rest of what I don't have plus double of some)

Is there anyone out there who doesn't use cams? What do you think?

I'll also ad: I'm climbing short 5.easy (UP TO 5.7) with what I have now and don't want to get on any higher grades til I get mor expierence under my belt

Probably Spirits. If you dig deep you'll see a big woman in a fur coat but look out if she is carrying skeleton. They do crazy shit down there. If you see her waving her hands around be sure to run because she is casting a spell. Look closely for smoke or some spirits like little ghost faces in her cigarette smoke. That should be a sure clue. If the skeletons are wearing sunglasses it's cool because you're probably in a television commercial.......like Wendy's or something. Listen carefully for music. If you hear music it is DEFINITELY a tv commercial. Float on down (assuming you're in a boat) to Market Square and look for me. I'll be selling cams. I have good ones.

Couldn't find anything on passive racks?? I don't understand.

If you're badass enough, every route goes all passive.

Man up.

I haven't even met Ray/SCIN or whoever you are, but man you are one crazy dude!

Abdcoke: Go active man, it's the only way to fly! Dirtbag traddies are always the ones to be leary of... Don't be so narrow, learn to place cams and have fun.

and beware of the Spirits....

i've never laughed so hard in my life today... maybe I need more cool buddies to drink with or something....

I distinctly remember a day, with SCIN, when on the way to the Red, hes preaching about how its all cams, from now on. "Screw stoppers", he said. (or "crackers", as his mom calls them)

We went to Hens Nest. After hanging on a crimp for 10 minutes trying to shove a cam in the little flare at the end of the crack on "Finger Lickin Good", he tries a "cracker". Drops right in perfectly.

There ya have it.

Sorry, but an all passive rack is almost as stupid as an all cams rack. I used only passive gear before cams existed, then jumped all over cams when they came out. Be smart and carry a mixed rack, it's much lighter (and cheaper) than all cams, and much more versatile than all passive.

I will say one positive thing about climbing without cams on trad routes. It kind of forces you to learn the art of protection. Sadly, it's a lost art for many.
