Road Trips and Redpointing

Do you like to redpoint on roadtrips? We were in Wyoming and Idaho for a couple of weeks and I found that I didn't want to get on a route more than twice because there was just so much to do. It just didn't make sense to waste time on bagging any one certain route when I was surrounded by so many classics.

Do you like to try and redpoint routes on road trips or do you feel like a kid in a candy store and stick to trying to bag tons of classics within your onsite range?

Depends on how much time I have. If I have a couple weeks or more, then I try to mix it up, onsight and project type stuff. If just a couple days, then just check out the classics of the area, maybe give a route a couple burns or maybe just move on to something else.

Kid in a candy store. I watched a friend of mine work a v-hard problem at HP40 for a LONG time, and I got on several problems in the meantime. Why bother if you only have a limited amount of time?

I've been in Salt Lake for the summer - it's been fun projecting some new routes here, but only because I have the time.

I find it really hard to give a route more than 2-3 tries on a trip. we were in Kalymnos for 2 weeks and i think i climbed 90-100 routes but only really 'worked' 2-3 routes the whole time.

For sure. New place I gotta do as many routes as possible before heading home. I may pick a few to get next time back, but I couldn't spend an entire day on one.

ditto Kirker - i have routes that i mark for "next time i'm in the area..." but otherwise i'm definately a kid in a candy store - which is never a bad thing to be!

I definitely enjoy onsight climbing at a new area. It was funny at Maple because in the beginning we thought we were all about going to as many areas as we could, but then we fell in love with the long, steep, shady main wall of The Minimum, so we managed to find ourselves there day after day. I'd still say that on a short trip like that, I wouldn't work a route more than 3-4 times before moving on to a different one, but I did find that I was more into redpointing certain routes than I thought I'd be.

I generally won't go more than 3 times on a route if I'm on a roadtrip unless I really like the route. too much rock to get bent on 1 pitch, unless you are trying to satisfy sponsors or something (8a list LMAO) which I'd guess most of us aren't.
