Only in Kentucky

Post by pigsteak »

Being a Yankee by upbringing, whenever we saw a confederate flag up north we were taught it was a symbol of racist hatred. You put one on your pickup truck, you were boldly stating you hated minorities, mostly blacks.

Moving to kentucky two years ago, I have seen many, many more people displaying these flags, as bumper stickers, off their motorcycles, as license plate holders, etc. However, each time I see them I can't help but have the same feeling well up inside of me that this person is a hateful SOB, and I get a yucky vibe in the pit of my stomach.

Am I over reacting to a childhood lesson? Does the confedrate flag really symbolize rebellion, proud heritage, etc like some like to tell me down here? Or no matter how you slice it, is it a person's way to proclaim their ignorance and racist views? Any thoughts from true southern folk?

preface - i'm a yankee

a while back a man with a deep southern drawl told me proudly that he was planning to get an american flag on his left bicep and a "rebel" flag on his right.

i commented - oh, rootin' for both sides?

he didn't get it.

at all.

I can' t think of anyone who really uses the confederate flag as a symbol of heritage who is not reflecting upon slavery and supremacy over minorities, except the Dukes of course.

I get a good laugh when I see the Confederate flag juxtaposed to a U.S. flag on some beat up truck with oversized wheels and a worn out muffler. Obviously someone didn't pay attention in 3rd grade history class.

I went to South Montgomery H.S. in Indiana - that was our slogan (we sucked at football) and I recall seeing the flag many times at games an on spirit days. That was until Billy, our class mascot, got beat up by the new and only black kid in our school for sporting the flag.

well said ashtray....I 100% agree that racism exists in all forms in all places, and that I have many prejudicial views myself. I was truly focusing on the use of the confederate flag. I have never been able to get over this wierd vibe I get when I see the rebel flag...
