all the suggestions here are great, I second them all.
something else to consider however is what year the route was made. If it's a 2000 10a then that's most likely going to be easier than a 1970 10a for example. Just something to keep in mind.

All the suggestions are great, but really, pick one in the book, maybe with some stars beside it, and start clipping bolts. Climb on.

there aren't any bolted tens from the 70's. sport climbing didn't take off until mid-90s. now if the person is talking about gear and they've already made it through the 8+/9+ they'll be fine.
