Why not buy a cheap truck and keep it parked by the Chevron. Drive down in the fuel efficient Corolla and then jump in the $1000 beat up truck.

I have been thinking alot about cars as well, since mine is kinda fading fast. I really think the two car system is the way to go - beater 4 x 4 for climbing and haul the dogs around in, and a little 35+ mpg car for work (I drive alot!). But then you start thinking about paying insurance on two cars, maintenance, etc. And you start wondering if the math works out to where you actually save any money over all.

If you can get a good, older subaru, they get OK gas milage, around low to mid 20's, and you can get up the motherload hill without trashing it even more then it is, or when it has been raining out.
