my two cents..
Get a car that best fits your life - monday thru friday. so many people get a "crag" car and then in two years wish they were either climbing more or bought something more practical for everyday life. It happen to me, I bought a new Honda Element in 04 and at the same time stopped climbing as much do to injuries and other stuff. I still love my element but sometimes wish a had a smaller more efficent car like a civic.
Good luck finding a good car, it can be really hard sometimes and it in the end a gamble. I drove used cars for about 20 years and it usually sucked, except for my sweet toyota van. Having a car payment really sucks but having a car I don't have to fix every two months is way worth it.
Suggestions on a Car
i'm w/ anticlimber. i love my Subaru but if i had a second car it would be something tiny w/ good gas mileage. hitch a ride w/ someone from Miguels or go somewhere that you don't need 4wd. and as its been said, lots of FWD cars can make it up the load hill

think ahead about future gas prices, $3 dollar gas is not going away and by time the vehicle is payed off the market maybe completely different.
I had purchased an F150 to replace my dieing Ranger and wasn't to concerned about gas usage because I was driving around 10K miles a year. I'm now driving around 20K-25K a year and gas is twice as expensive. I've had my eye out for a small commuter car with the idea that gas is going to be at least $4 in two years.

Sketchy Steve could bang up the Lode hill in abhorent conditions in his little beater toyota corolla. I was truely rad to see him fearless get a running start and bust his way up that hill, not caring that he was catching air as he surfed over some of those big bumps at mid-hill.

my company car struggled on the Lode hill, but even that RWD Impala made it up. Of course I didn't GAS what happened to it, so long as it was clean. I was shocked I didn't get hit up for damage when I turned it in... but I digress.
Krampus, don't get a Subaru. Mine gets shitty mileage. I recommend carpooling to the Red, or at least to the crag. Everyone wins. Even the driver, since you will pay him/her lots of money for the ride. Hey, need a ride this w/e?
