its been a while since i've been down but Miguel's carries basic gear so you should be able to buy what you need there. if you're going to be sport climbing a dozen draws and a rope should be plenty of gear. just be careful, not to be rude but you sound rather inexperienced and that scares me.

just remember to backclip and everything should be ok. I am sure there will be plenty of church groups at roadside who can show you good examples of backclipping

Jogle:

if you want and are able, pm me and we'll go out on Sunday if you want. What gear did you think you'd need and are you doing trad or sport?

I took a guy out a few weeks ago who said he knew what he was doing. He had led in the gym and followed trad outside. i offered up the first lead to the two guys with me and he took it. he ended up way off route and nearly to the second bolt after skipping the first bolt. i had to talk him down, trying to stay calm so i didn't freak him out. he got down to the first bolt, back clipped it and then had no clue what i was talking about when i told him it was backclipped. he had no clue what he was doing! this is why i am warning you to be careful. climbing and leading in a gym is hugely different than climbing outside. there isn't tape marking the holds and there aren't draws hung on the bolts (unless you're climbing 12+ or harder). also, make sure you know how to clean anchors when you're getting off a route. you don't learn that kind of stuff in a gym b/c there is no need for it. if you don't know what i mean when i say "cleaning an anchor" find out before you go out, talk to some people at miguels or something.

arrghhh... why do i get worked up over noob safety?!?!?!
