Good climbs for young climbers at Red River Gorge?

Post by miked »

I am coming to the Red River Gorge to take my little kids and their cousins for a couple of days of climbing at Red River Gorge. I took them last year to the Practice Wall at Muir Valley and it worked out well. I was wondering if anyone had any beta for a couple of other good locations (trad or sport) in the 5.easy range that 6-11 year olds would have success on. I also want to try to stay out of the way of other climbers who might not want to have a bunch of little kids running around. I was thinking about Fortress or Pistol Ridge as some possiblities. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Eureka at Global Village is worth the long hike. I have had both of my kids on it.

Pistol Ridge sounds like a great idea. Couple good, easy sport routes and several easy trad routes would make for a pretty good day. Fortress might be a bit crowded and I know you said you wanted to try to avoid that. Tower would be crowded too perhaps, but it might be another decent choice. Depending on how crazy you want to get, Caver's Route could be a blast for the kids!

Are you the guy with the kids that let them run around loose on 25' cliff lines that tried to get the one to down climb the chiminey at the practice wall?

The Shire in the southern region is great for kids. I took my 5yr old there for his first climb on real rock.
Oh man, he is messing that up. However, he is missing his left leg so that way would probably be harder for him. SCIN, just before spraying some beta for a climber doing a route the WRONG way.

Fortress is a bad idea for a number of reasons.

No one has mentioned the Great Wall in Muir. It has a 6, 2 7's and an 8. You could hit that and Bruisebrother's Wall up in the same day. Both walls can get crowded, though. Hopefully you have taught your children proper crag etiquette. They really shouldn't be running around at the base of the cliffs, or yelling. A periodic romp on the trails under your or another adult's supervision is a lot of fun and will keep them from getting bored between climbs, as well as tire them out. It always worked for my little climber.

The Gallery has a rad lie called 27 years of experience, or something like that. I also agree on Eureka at Lady Slipper/Global area and the Shire has some fun easy routes....
